Sarah Cromack - Member Story

Swim 22 Challenge

Sarah Cromack - Member Story

25 years ago Sarah Cromack was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 18. Since then Sarah has raised crucial funds for the charity through running, however injury cut my running short and I was searching for a new challenge, when I found Rushcliffe Arena and their swim22 membership.

Between 22 February and 22 May, in between work, school runs and after school activities for my children,  I decided I was going to take on the challenge of swimming the equivalent of the English Channel in my local pool at Rushcliffe Arena (that’s 35,711 metres / 1,428 lengths) and raise money for Diabetes UK.

For the last 10 weeks I’ve squeezed in two swims per week in between working and looking after my 5 and 6 year old daughters and, on Wednesday 8th May,  I completed my challenge finishing at 22.19 miles (35,711 metres / 1,428 lengths), 2 weeks ahead of my deadline.

Both my daughters have swimming lessons at Rushcliffe and they both swam with me on one of my swims, Amelia (aged 6) completed 10 lengths.

This challenge has helped me overcome some personal challenges, mentally and physically along with managing the ever changing glucose and insulin levels!

Over her time completing the challenge sarah became a local celebrity appearing on TV to raise awareness of her challenge

I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the last 10 weeks, with a big thank you to Rushcliffe Arena too for helping me achieve my challenge. Overall I have raised a total of £2,132 for Diabetes UK, placing me 3rd in the fundraising leaderboard out of 5,500 people !
