The centre has been closed since 20th March when lockdown was introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the Prime Minister announcing indoor gyms and swimming pools must remain closed until further notice, the council has taken advantage of the delay to alter the project timetable. Work is now expected to start on the project at the end of August. The dryside refurbishment works, involve an extension of the current gym and the addition of a new multi purpose room and is planned for completion in October. The wetside refurbishment project will involve a full refurbishment of the swimming pool changing rooms including dedicated disabled changing facilities, additional family changing areas, improved shower facilities and will also see refurbishment of the pool area and spa. This is planned for completion in the first quarter of 2021. We will provide regular progress updates via our social media and website pages throughout the refurbishment works.
“We are delighted that the investment into improving the centre is happening now and we look forward to providing what will be a greatly enhanced experience for all the residents of South Northants.” Glen Hall Managing Director Parkwood Leisure
The impact of the project means when the centre is allowed to reopen on the 25th July, the swimming pool will be unavailable.
The team has put a range of measures in place so customers can enjoy the benefits of exercise, while still observing social distancing rules. These include spacing out of gym equipment and reduced capacity. As well as relocating exercise classes to larger spaces to give everyone more room. An enhanced cleaning regime will be in place, hand sanitiser will be available throughout the centres and we will be implementing a one way system throughout the centre.
“I’m delighted to confirm our commitment to delivering this £1million scheme which will deliver first class facilities for residents. We know some people may be disappointed they have to wait a while longer to enjoy a swim at Towcester however customers will be able to swim and take part in lessons at our recently refurbished sister site in Brackley.”
The dryside works will include the extension of the current gym into the existing health suite area. This will enable us to spread out the current equipment, but also enhance the functional fitness offering.
We will also be creating a multi purpose room in the existing Salon, to be utilised for Yoga, Pilates and other activities.
There will also be improvements to the air conditioning and ventilation systems in these areas.
The Gym, studios and sports hall are the facilities that will remain open during the works. The Swimming Pool and Changing Village will remain closed until we open after completion of the project
It may be that we will need to screen a small section of the gym for a short period of time but any inconvenience will be kept to a minimum, but this will be communicated in advance via customer emails.
Please note that once we reopen the Centre after the closure due to Covid 19 there will be revised opening times and timetables. These will be updated on the website once we are open.
We have taken the decision to close the Sauna & Steam rooms. Usage of these facilities is low but the costs to run them are high. We are also aware that these facilities would require a significant amount of investment to get them to an acceptable standard. All of which does not make them financially viable to remain open. The new Social Distancing rules will make these areas very difficult to operate.
Fitness Memberships will run as usual with the Gym and Group Exercise Classes still scheduled to operate, but at a reduced level as mentioned above. Swim Members will have the option to utilize the facilities at Brackley or have their membership frozen during the duration of the works. If frozen Direct Debits will not be collected and Annual Swim Members will have the time added to their membership. Swim members will also be given the opportunity to benefit from the newly refurbished fitness facilities by upgrading their membership.
If you have any further questions you can speak to the membership team at the centre when we are open.
Swimming Lessons will be transferred to Brackley where possible for the extent of the works and direct debit payees will also have the opportunity to freeze. Customers should not cancel their direct debit as we will be able to reactivate payments as soon as we open, and will ensure that places are not lost.
We will be reviewing the swimming lesson programme during closure to ensure we have the right sessions in place to meet demand.
