AN UPDATE TO DEREHAM LEISURE CENTRE

Due to essential maintenance work to the pool tanks at Dereham Leisure Centre the swimming pools will remain closed for an extended period and will reopen at some point in November 2020.

This extended period reflects that the maintenance works required were not sufficiently developed and designed ahead of the mandatory Government closure in March 2020. Whilst efforts have been made to accelerate the works, Government lock down restrictions have prevented the procurement of specialist services and manufacturing shutdowns across Europe have delayed the importation of the materials needed to complete the essential maintenance tasks.

Opportunities are being considered to provide water time for swimming clubs by transferring them to Breckland Leisure Centre & Waterworld following the easing of the mandatory closure of leisure facilities. Further communication is being undertaken with this specific user group directly.

The rest of the facility is not impacted and will reopen on a phased basis as from 25 July adhering to guidance from central government as well as industry bodies such as UK Active, Sport England and individual sport NGB’s. Further details will be communicated to customers as soon as we know more.

Please see the section below for answers to some of the frequently asked questions that you may have:

WHAT IS THE SCALE OF THE WORK AND WHAT AREAS WILL IT INVOLVE

The scope of work is to fully replace all tiles within both the main and learner pools. This will involve fully draining both pools prior to works beginning early August. Tile replacement work will be concentrated within the pool hall, however we are also currently looking into potential improvements to be made to the changing village whilst this closure takes place.

WHAT FACILITIES WILL BE CLOSED?

Both swimming pools and changing village will be fully closed throughout the project, the swimming pool gallery will also be closed off to the public.

WHEN WILL THE POOLS REOPEN?

Our current estimate is late November 2020. We expect the pool tile project to be complete by then, however we will then require a lead in time to fill & heat the pools back up (this can take a few weeks) as well as complete the appropriate chemical and microbiological checks that will be required prior to reopening.

We will communicate nearer the time exact dates and how this impacts on casual swimmers, clubs, lessons etc.

We currently envisage opening our pool at Breckland Leisure centre & Waterworld (Thetford) to clubs and lessons from 7 September 2020 and are yet to formally agree a date yet for lane swimming.

WHAT WILL THE POOL TEMPERATURE BE WHEN YOU REOPEN?

A recent investment to replace the centres boilers will ensure the pools are heated to:

Main Pool - 27 to 29 degrees

Learner Pool - 30 to 32 degrees

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY MEMBERSHIP DURING THIS PERIOD?

Whilst the swimming pools remains closed swimming memberships will remain frozen. Once works are completed on the swimming pool and it is in a position to re-open members will be informed and advised of the direct debit collection prior to any payment being taken. All Swimming annual memberships will have the closure period added onto their expiration date. In short, customers will not pay for a service that is unavailable.

CAN I USE MY SWIMMING MEMBERSHIP AT ANY OTHER FACILITIES DURING THE CLOSURE PERIOD?

Yes, you can use Breckland Leisure Centre and Waterworld, however this would reactivate your membership charges. Please note this will also be dependent on when swimming resumes at this site following the Covid-19 closure and also what activity is timetabled upon opening.

Please note swim sessions will have to be pre-booked when they become available and unless you have a current Dereham or Breckland Leisure Centre & Waterworld membership charges will be applicable.

I HAVE A HEALTH & FITNESS MEMBERSHIP AT DEREHAM WHICH INCLUDES SWIMMING - WHAT WILL I BE CHARGED WHILST THE POOL IS CLOSED?

A 50% reduction will be applied in August followed by subsequent months up until the pool reopens of 25%

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SWIMMING LESSONS?

Swimming lessons will remain suspended for the extent of the works and direct debit payments will not be taken. Customers should not cancel their direct debit as we will be able to reactivate payments as soon as we open, and will ensure that places are not lost. We will be reviewing the swimming lesson programme during closure to ensure we have the right sessions in place to meet demand. We will also run some intensive lessons to ensure that our swimmers get back up to their previous levels.
