The outdoors is fantastic. All the fresh air, changing scenery and terrain is great for our bodies- both physically and mentally. But it’s the time of year where icicles are partial to hanging off our noses and a defrost button is needed after our workouts!
Luckily, there are alternatives to outdoor exercise; here are 6 great reasons to head indoors this winter:
First and foremost, you are safe. It’s the time of year when the majority of us leave for work in darkness and arrive home in darkness. The benefit lies in getting up as early as you like and not having to work out in pitch darkness. The gym’s conditions are regulated, so you don’t have to worry about watery eyes from the wind or spectacularly balancing yourself if you come across a spot of ice. No Bambi-on-ice moments here.
Not only are you in a safe environment, you are also guaranteed safety and motivated help through instructors and staff. They are more than happy to demonstrate to you correct techniques and share some top tips for you to get the most out of your workout. You don’t have to worry about getting caught in a cartoon-like sketch- struggling beneath a monstrous barbell! Make the most of the instructors’ help. That’s what they’re there for.
With or without forward planning, working out at the gym can be very social. Whether you take a friend with you and motivate each other every week, or if you encounter the same familiar faces in your Monday morning spin class, there is definitely a sense of community to be had that will keep you coming back each week.
Even if it takes you a good few hours to come around on a Monday morning, you don’t necessarily have to talk to anyone either! Just going and being around other active people in an anonymous way can satisfy your need for mutual comradeship but still allows you to get on with your workout.
The majority of memberships these days don’t just mean the gym. This means you can, not only use the variety of fitness kit available to you in the gym, but also attend classes, use swimming pools, and even visit the health suites. According to a study by the University of Florida* ‘variety is the spice of life’ and injecting some variety into your fitness routine can help you stay motivated for longer.
The equipment at the gym is usually top-notch and accumulating the variety and quality in your home would certainly set you back a fair few pennies. It’s great to head to one place knowing that it’s all there waiting to be used. You can switch from aerobic equipment to resistance equipment in just a few paces, which ties in rather nicely with adding variety to your workout (see above). Even better if your centre has swimming pools, specialist classes and health suites ‘cause you can probably use them too!
Of course, the gym offers convenience. It’s easier to hit up the gym on your way home from work than build up the motivation to wrap up your ears, nose and other extremities to brave the Great British weather. You don’t have to worry about any logistical issues, like weather, route or equipment; you just need to turn up in your kit and go.
