That’s just what Rushcliffe Arena member and keen mountaineer; Tony Mills plans to do this May 2017 when he tackles the world’s highest peak - Mount Everest. And Parkwood Community Leisure plans to help him achieve just that.
Tony (48 yrs) lives with his wife and two young sons in their family home in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham. When Tony isn’t being a full time father and a Funeral Director he indulges in his passion for the great outdoors; in particular some of the greatest and most challenging peaks across the globe. And this May will be no exception when he takes on mountaineering’s most coveted prize - Mount Everest. At 8,848 metres (29,029ft) above sea level, Mt Everest is the earth’s highest mountain. It’s peak reaches the height of a cruising passenger jet - temperatures can be as low as minus -80 degrees and wind speeds reach 200mph in the jet stream. The air is so thin, there is 66% less oxygen in each breath at the summit than there is at sea level.
However none of this seems to phase Tony who has been climbing for nearly 20 years and his summit achievements have taken him around the globe. In 2014, Tony successfully summited Cho Oyu - the world’s sixth highest mountain at 8,201 metres (26,906ft)
But Tony admits to coming late to the world of mountaineering. After serving in the Army for over 5 years, his passion for adventure was clearly already seeded, however it wasn’t until 2009 that his dream of high altitude climbing was realised.
We asked Tony the ultimate question “Why climb Everest”?
Tony responded “I suppose it was my version of a mid-life crisis lol, it was either buy a fast motorcycle and don a leather suit or strap crampons onto my shoes and climb mountains”
Tony continued ”There’s always been the hidden adventurer inside me and Mt. Everest represents the pinnacle of high altitude mountaineering. There may be more beautiful mountains to climb. There may be more technically challenging mountains out there, but Everest is simply the biggest - which makes it the ultimate goal in most mountaineers eyes”
Parkwood Community Leisure have been delighted to sponsor & support Tony in his quest to conquer the world’s highest peak’s. The fitness professionals at Expressions Health & Fitness work closely with him to aide in his preparation.
Tony added, “Strength & endurance play a crucial role in mountaineering, as does the ability to sustain high levels of intense physical activity at extreme altitude and in sub zero temperatures. The guys and girls at the gym have been an enormous help to me. They showed me there are many variations of exercise that could be so easily transfered into mountaineering. You don't just get to Mt Everest base camp and set off for the summit in one day. It’s not like hiking up Ben Nevis with a packed lunch, (UK highest peak) I’ll be on the mountain for 40 days. During that time I’ll be ascending & descending to camps, each higher than the previous in order to acclimatise to the altitude. It puts an enormous amount of stress on the body. Both physical and mental. Being in peak physical condition is very important. The support of Parkwood Community Leisure and the staff at the centre has been fantastic”
From all of the staff here at Rushcliffe Arena, we wish Tony and his team the very best. Be safe.
