Get Safe for Summer Water Safety Campaign

11 Jul 2011
Teams from 54 Parkwood Leisure centres will be visiting local schools around the country, from June through to 22nd July, to deliver the ‘Get Safe for Summer’ Water Safety Campaign. The free campaign has been created to inform and educate children aged 8-11 years old, to be safe and aware when playing and having fun around water.

The Parkwood Leisure campaign is now in it’s 5th year and is supported by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS). Tragically, 450-500 people drown in the UK every year, of which 10% are children. The campaign engages with the children through encouraging discussion, suggestions, fun and participation. A Power Point presentation draws awareness of potential water danger elements, what to do in these situations, who to call and how to avoid getting into difficulty.

Graeme Maclennan, Head of Sales and Marketing, explains, “Swimming for leisure is a fun and enjoyable fitness activity. It is excellent for your health and best of all, it’s open to everyone. It is important that children are aware of the dangers, so that they can remain safe”. Parkwood Leisure has put together a voucher booklet, for the schools, of discounts and free sessions, to encourage families to swim and exercise together, which the team hands out at the end of the presentation.
