Get Safe for Summer is Parkwood Leisure’s successful and much loved water safety campaign. It aims to raise awareness of basic water safety principles and it will shortly be coming to a school near you. Both the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) support the scheme.
Summer is fast approaching, with many people going on a seaside holiday or planning a daytrip by a lake or river. This scheme has been devised keep families safe around the water no matter where they decide to go. It is vital for children to realise that swimming in open water is very different to swimming in a pool.
A good understanding of water safety is just as important as learning to swim because according to the RLSS, drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death for children in the UK. After attending one of Parkwood Leisure’s sessions children have a better understanding of the dangers involved with open water swimming, they will be able to recognise potential dangers, know what to do in an emergency and how to stay safe.
All children who attend the talks will also have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win £1000 of sports equipment for their school.
Get Safe for Summer teams from participating Parkwood Leisure Centres will be on the road during June and July. If you do not already have a visit scheduled and would like to arrange for a team to visit your school, please contact your local participating Parkwood Leisure Centre.
