Jo Rickwood, a specialist Health and Exercise Instructor at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, was named winner of the ‘Making a Difference’ award at The Weston Business Awards, held on 4th February.
The awards, organised by the Weston-Super-Mare Chamber of Commerce, are designed to reward excellence and celebrate achievement in the local business community.
Jo was nominated for the ‘Making a Difference’ award by colleagues and members of Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, operated by Legacy Leisure, for her exceptional work in the local community with the leisure centre’s pioneering Energise Cancer Rehabilitation programme and GP referral scheme.
The highly successful Energise Cancer Rehabilitation Centre programme is designed to improve the health of former cancer patients with a programme of exercise classes specifically tailored for individuals whose quality of life can be maintained or improved by taking part in regular, supervised exercise classes with specially-qualified fitness instructors. The 12-week community programme, funded by Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Services Network, is run in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, North Somerset Council, NHS Bristol and Bristol University.
The GP Referral Scheme, run in conjunction with local GP surgeries, physiotherapists and nurses, is a six-week course that incorporates health screening and a personal exercise programme. The sessions are aimed to integrate an individual into the gym and give them the tools and confidence to help reach personal goals.
Commenting on her award win, Jo explains: “I’m thrilled to receive this prestigious award and it’s wonderful to be recognised among local businesses and individuals who are making a significant difference to the Weston community. It’s extremely rewarding to provide inclusive fitness and support to countless people who suffer from long term health conditions such as Diabetes, MS and Cancer.
Jo adds: “Hutton Moor Leisure Centre sits at the heart of the local community and with the support of a fantastic team, I’m looking forward to helping improve the quality of life of more participants over the coming year.”
