Two-year initiative puts Staffordshire Moorlands in the swim
WITH free swimming now on offer to the under 17s and over 60s, would-be water babes of all ages have been reminded that it is never too late to learn.
The benefits of swimming were highlighted this week by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, which joined forces with the Government last month (April) in a two-year funding partnership.
The deal between the council and Department for Culture, Media and Sport means that customers in the two age groups can swim for free at the Biddulph, Cheadle and Leek leisure centres.
Said Cllr Mark Deaville, portfolio holder for leisure, sport, parks and countryside: “Free swimming is a great form of exercise, and supports our priority outcome of improved health. This is why we’re fully committed to promoting the free swimming for the under 17s and over 60s”.
To register for free swimming, prospective participants should download an application form from below or visit any of the three leisure centres. Once signed up, each participant will have his or her own membership card that allows free access to the majority of sessions.
Meanwhile, the leisure centres continue to provide swimming lessons for adults – and age is no barrier. Seventy six-year-old Peggy Lomas learnt to swim at the age of 65 and now uses her skill to raise money for charity. To date, she has swum a lung-bursting 1,800 miles and earned an amazing £8,000 for charities including the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, Muscular Dystrophy Charity, Staffordshire Air Ambulance and Biddulph Moor First Responders.
