On 3rd March 2008 Lord Coe revealed that Torbay Leisure Centre was one of the 600 sporting venues across the UK which have been lined up to host visiting Olympic teams for training camps ahead of the 2012 Games in London. Torbay has been chosen as a potential Olympic Team preparation venue for Triathlon teams.
The 2012 chairman issued a list of a record number of venues they have deemed appropriate for Olympic preparation. Overseas teams will be given the list at the Beijing Games in August. "We said that we wanted the London Games to be for athletes, and the facilities listed in this Guide will really help overseas athletes prepare well," Coe said. “The process we have been through shows a great spread of high-quality facilities throughout the UK that can be used by elite level athletes."
The Leisure Centre is working in partnership with the Torbay Triathlon Club and the Torbay Sports Council to attract visiting Olympic teams to the area.
